Introduction
Morgenmete was founded in 2018 as an independent publisher dedicated to exploring the humor and absurdity of life through the lens of breakfast. We believe in print, and in celebrating the best meal of the day, and we love that breakfast is a topic that speaks to both universal experiences and unique traditions in imaginative ways.
Although Morgenmete takes inspiration from iconic food magazines like Lucky Peach and The Gourmand, as well as industry classics like Bon Appétit and Saveur, we aim to publish stories by contributors who don’t come from traditional food-writing backgrounds. Breakfast is the starting point for our editorial, but our diverse cast of writers, illustrators, and photographers interprets that topic in endlessly creative and varied ways.
Issue 02 built on the irreverent tone from the first issue by becoming a little bit more buttoned up in layout and tone, but still just as expressive and whimsical as it had been. The run for Issue 02 was 750 copies, distributed through Ra and Olly worldwide an had debut windows in Magculture London and Magalleria. There was a big launch event in Atlanta at Press Shop
‘The Always Connected Issue’ believes the breakfast table is the best lens to examine our connected culture. Frustrated with mindlessly scrolling, living in notification hell, it’s hard to get away from being extremely online, and breakfast is no exception. We examine what this means for the first meal of the day with deep stories, delicious photo essays, syrupy reads and hot dishes.
The Concept
We can get virtually anything we need delivered to us within 30 minutes, all at the tap of a finger; we can instantly share our breakfast videos and recipes and inspiration with viewers around the globe. But too often, we find ourselves mindlessly scrolling while we pile food into our mouths, simultaneously living in notifications hell, swimming in targeted ads, and dreaming of inbox zero. It’s hard to get away from being extremely online, and breakfast is no exception.
Breakfast traditionally marks the start of a new day, but our devices are often first to capture our attention. What could we be accomplishing if we didn’t feel the need to catch up on every notification? Is there a healthy, balanced breakfast of staying connected?
Morgenmete’s Always Connected Issue believes that the breakfast table is the best lens through which to examine our screen-based culture, and we encourage you to bring your hopes, frustrations and curiosities about our digitized world to it. As our lives continue to change—for better and for worse—due to emerging technologies and algorithmic feeds, it’s comforting to know that we’ll still start every day hungry again.

Editorial Design
The editorial design is founded on breaking up the magazine into a few sections: short stacks for smaller essays, full breakfast for features (and bespoke spread designs), photo essays, original recipes and extras full of delightful surprises.
Each section leads with a mini table of contents, and consistent layouts with type set in RB Freigeist and GT Alpina for a mix of authoritative serif with a quirky sans serif. Bespoke feature spreads compliment original illustration artwork and lets each story reflect the editorial voice of the author. Editorial direction and design by Tim.
